Having clean smooth skin is essential prior to apply makeup. Our skin is often exposed to the skin and is subjective to sun damage. If we don’t use proper precautions such as sunscreen before going out in the sun; it may result in sunspots, wrinkles, etc. Adding sunscreen to your daily skincare routine along with your makeup routine can prevent your skin from any form of sun damage.
Here are a few suggestions to consider regarding sunscreen use in your daily routine:
- Use a sunscreen with SPF 15 to 50 protection. In accordance with your daily skin routine, you can choose a sunscreen with SPF (Skin Protection Factor) 15 – 30. It is imperative to know that even if you are not directly exposed to sunlight, radiations from the sun still can affect your skin and cause skin damage in the long run. If you plan to spend your day outside, depending on your skin color, you can use a sunscreen with SPF 30 – 50 to provide you with added protection. It is important to remember that sunscreens with SPF above 50 have no considerable advantage and such products can hurt your wallet!
- Since all of your body is exposed to radiation from the sun, it is recommended to apply sunscreen on all parts of your body, especially the parts that are usually exposed more often. Use a mirror to allow yourself to apply an even layer, especially on the face, ears, and neck. Try not to miss a spot. Various lotions and serums have different consistencies but with time and experience, you will be able to opt for a sunscreen that suits best with your current skincare routine.
- Apply by patting the sunscreen rather than rubbing it to allow for complete absorption of the sunscreen and reduce any skin irritation. Wait for at least 3 – 5 minutes for the sunscreen to completely absorb in, after which you can begin applying your makeup. Few makeup products have sun protection built-in, but they tend to be not as effective. Hence use a tinted SPF product as an added layer of protection. Use a primer with built-in sun protection or a liquid foundation that has SPF qualities if you have oily skin. This will provide you with an extended duration of sun protection rather than using sunscreen alone.
- To prevent a cakey look, switch to a liquid-based or a cream foundation so it can be consistent with the texture of the sunscreen. Experiment with a liquid bronzer and blush to achieve a “sun-kissed” appearance. Apply your make as you would usually do. Avoid mixing your sunscreen with other makeup products as there is a chance that it might lose its effectiveness or may even lead to skin irritation. In order to find the best make up product that works well with your sunscreen, you need to invest a little cash, but hey, its money well spent if the looks are classy, with a healthy skin to flaunt your looks!
- After applying your makeup, use either a powder or spray-on sunscreen to provide your skin with long-lasting protection. Each type has its own perks like the spray can be very easily applied but the powdered sunscreen ensures better skin coverage. The spray-on sunscreen also provides extra moisture and provides a matt finish to your overall look.

However, each type of sunscreen has its own issues related to it. For spray-on sunscreen, if you touch your skin without letting it dry, then you can reduce the overall sun protection, by rubbing it off. Powdered sunscreen application must be done by touching your skin, which has a risk of ruining your makeup. Hence, with experience, you will learn which sunscreen suits you best, but once you find the right makeup products, it's totally worth it.
